Location & How to Get to the Pyramid Of Unas

The pyramid is located in the golden plateau of northern Saqqara on the southwest of the magical funerary complex of Djoser and is found on the field line that leads between the pyramid of Menkauhor and the pyramid of Sekhemkhet.

Pyramid Of Unas History, Who and Why Built It

The pyramid of Unas is known as Nefer Asut Unas which means "Beautiful are the cult places of Unas", "Perfect are the places of Unas", and "The Places of Unas Are Complete". This marvelous pyramid was created by the 9^th  ruler and the final king of the 5^th dynasty of the old kingdom of Egypt (2700–2200 BC).  It was built just 300 years after the great step pyramid of Saqqara to be his tomb and offer him the chance to head into the afterlife and join his rightful place with the gods of ancient Egypt.  

What makes the pyramid important in the history of ancient Egyptian pyramid construction is for the first time in history the interior of the pyramid showed great innovation in funerary practices. Within the area are a number of tombs belonging to the second dynasty of Nebra, Hotepsekhemwy, and Ninetjer. A number of private individuals' tombs from dating to the 18^th and 20^th dynasties and powerful officials from the 5^th dynasty plus tombs that date back all the way to the Saite era (664–525 BC) and the Persian period (525–404 BC) which was known as “Persian tombs”.

There are known as the most preserved and smallest collection of pyramid texts which date all the way to the old kingdom and appeared frequently during the times of the 6^th dynasty all the way to the 8^th dynasty.

The main function of the funerary literature and this text is responsible for uniting the ba and ka into the Ankh and securing his eternal life with the ancient Egyptian gods within the heavens. The ancient Egyptian belief followed the concept that every person is made of three parts the body, "The Ba, and the Ka" which represent the two parts of the soul. When everyone dies, the ka leaves the body to return with the gods and the ba stays with the body then when the mummy is put in the burial chamber the ba begins its journey to the afterlife.

The united soul makes its way to the horizon "Akhet" the place of resurrection. The texts show the transformation of the king into an effective being known as the Akh who was resurrected from the dead. Some of the texts declared him as a version of the god Osiris under the name "Osiris Unas". There are early parts of the coffin texts which made the initial basis for the book of the dead made in the book of dead during the New Kingdom of Egypt (1570 – 1050 BC).

The Structure of Unas pyramid

The pyramid of Unas used to be a smooth-sided pyramid made of limestone. It has a height of 43 m (141 ft; 82 cu) on a base of 57.75 m (189 ft; 110 cu), a Volume of 47,390 m3 (61,980 cu yd) with a slope of 56°18'35". The pyramid is known as the smallest pyramid ever built in the old kingdom despite the long reign of Unas which lasted for 33 years. The pyramid was ruined with time due to the lack of materials and poor construction methods. His funerary complex is located between the southwest corner of the pyramid complex of Djoser and the pyramid of Sekhemkhet. The Pyramid is in total symmetry which is the pyramid of Userkaf at the northeast corner of Saqqara.

The complex is made of the main pyramid, a valley temple, a mortuary temple, a causeway, and a cult pyramid which are all enclosed by a perimeter wall of 7 m (23 ft; 13 cu) tall. The pyramid is made of 6 high steps of limestone, the valley temple is found at the mouth of a wadi within a natural harbor, the same wadi used to be a path, and the mortuary temple is similar to one of the pyramids of Djedkare and across the southern part of the mortuary temple is the cult pyramid. The are two temples linked by the long causeway. The remains of the valley temple are viewed as the modern entrance to the magical area of Saqqara.

This heavenly 750 m long causeway is extremely decorated and was reused and used by future rulers plus it holds a number of columns that are decorated with a number of painted relief scenes plus images of people starving during his era. There are about 450 m long boat pits located south of the causeway and over 200 tombs that have been excavated which belong to royal members such as the Tomb of Niankhkhnum and Khnumhotep, the Tomb of Neferherenptah, and the Tomb of Irukaptah.

Pyramid of Unas Inside

The interior of the Pyramid of Unas consists of a series of chambers and passages, some of which are decorated with the Pyramid Texts. The entrance to the pyramid is located on its north side, and from there, a descending passage leads to a series of chambers and passages. The largest chamber is the burial chamber, where the pharaoh's sarcophagus was placed. The walls of the burial chamber and passages were decorated with intricate carvings and inscriptions, including the Pyramid Texts. The Pyramid texts are the oldest religious texts in ancient Egypt, and they were written in hieroglyphs to ensure the pharaoh's safe journey to the afterlife.

The inscriptions were intended to provide the pharaoh with protection and guidance in the afterlife, and they include spells, hymns, and prayers to various gods.
